How to Help a Nervous Dog Feel More Comfortable at the Groomers

Grooming involves many unusual sensations.

There is handling of sensitive areas, running water, dryers, clippers, scissors, brushes and unfamiliar sounds and smells.

Dogs are also being asked to stand and cooperate with somebody who may initially be a stranger.

For some dogs, none of this is a problem.

For others, one or several elements can cause worry.

A dog may also have had an unpleasant experience in the past or simply not have been introduced to grooming when they were young.

One of the best things you can do is be open.

Tell your groomer what you know about your dog’s behaviour and previous experiences.

If they hate having their feet touched, say so.

If dryers frighten them, mention it.

If they have previously snapped during grooming, that is important information too.

A good groomer would rather know beforehand than discover it unexpectedly during the appointment.

This allows us to think about how best to approach the dog.

Dogs can be incredibly good at picking up on changes in our behaviour.

If grooming day becomes a huge emotional event before you have even left home, your dog may recognise that something unusual is happening.

Aim for a calm, matter of fact arrival.

Give your groomer the information they need and allow them to start building their own relationship with your dog.

Long emotional goodbyes can sometimes make settling more difficult rather than easier.

Waiting until your dog desperately needs grooming can make each visit more challenging.

The coat may require more work, the appointment may take longer and the salon remains relatively unfamiliar.

A regular schedule can make the experience more predictable.

Your dog begins to recognise the environment, groomer and routine.

For dogs that need professional coat maintenance, familiarity can be a powerful tool.

You can help between appointments without attempting to recreate the groom yourself.

Gentle, positive handling around your dog’s paws, ears and body can make those areas feel less unusual when somebody else needs to examine or groom them.

Regular coat care can also prevent tangles becoming severe.

The important word is gentle.

Holding a frightened dog down until they stop struggling does not necessarily teach them that handling is safe. It may simply teach them that escape is impossible.

Build confidence gradually.

Traditional busy salons can contain several dogs, multiple dryers, people moving around and lots of activity.

Many dogs cope perfectly well with that environment.

Some do better with fewer distractions.

This is important.

If a dog is struggling, welfare comes before aesthetics.

There may be occasions when completing every part of the intended groom is not appropriate.

That is not failure.

A beautiful haircut is never worth pushing a dog beyond what is reasonable simply because that was the original plan.

Building trust can take time, particularly for dogs with established fears.

Prevention is always preferable where possible.

Introducing puppies to grooming early gives them time to become familiar with handling, bathing, drying and salon equipment before they require complicated haircuts.

This does not guarantee a dog will never find something difficult, but it gives them useful experience during an important stage of their development.

Tell your new groomer what happened as accurately as you can.

Try to separate what you know from what you suspect.

For example, “my dog now reacts when their front feet are touched” is useful information even if nobody knows exactly why the behaviour began.

Do not expect one appointment to erase a deeply established fear.

Trust may need to be rebuilt gradually.

The aim should be progress, not perfection.

If your dog finds grooming difficult, you do not need to feel embarrassed about asking for help.
