If you are wondering how often your dog should be groomed, when your puppy should have their first appointment or what happens if your dog is nervous, you are certainly not alone.
At Hello Grooming in Spennymoor, I am always happy to answer questions because understanding what happens during grooming can make the experience easier for both you and your dog.
I offer calm, one to one dog grooming from my cabin salon, with every appointment tailored around the individual dog in front of me.
Here are answers to some of the questions I am asked most often.
How often should my dog be professionally groomed?
There is no single grooming schedule that is right for every dog.
How often your dog needs professional grooming depends on their breed, coat type, lifestyle, haircut and how much coat maintenance you are able to do at home.
Dogs with longer or continuously growing coats will generally need appointments more frequently than short coated breeds. Regular appointments can also make grooming more familiar and predictable for your dog.
If you are unsure what schedule would work for your dog, I can recommend one based on their individual coat and needs.
When should my puppy have their first groom?
It is worth introducing your puppy to grooming early rather than waiting until they desperately need a haircut.
Once your puppy has completed the appropriate vaccination programme and your vet is happy for them to mix outside the home, they can begin getting used to professional grooming.
Early appointments are about much more than cutting hair. They introduce puppies to being brushed, handled, bathed, dried and having their paws, face and nails touched.
The aim is to help grooming become a normal part of life.
What if my dog is nervous about being groomed?

I would much rather know about your dog’s worries before their appointment so that I can plan accordingly.
Hello Grooming is deliberately different from a busy, high volume salon. Appointments are one to one, which allows me to concentrate on the dog in front of me and adapt the experience where appropriate.
Some dogs need more reassurance. Some benefit from consistency. Others simply need time to understand that they are somewhere safe.
I work with your dog rather than against them and will never expect every dog to behave in exactly the same way.

Do you groom Pugs and French Bulldogs?
Yes. Brachycephalic breeds are particularly close to my heart.
My own Pug, Nero, inspired my interest in these wonderful dogs, and I have undertaken additional training in brachycephalic breed care.
Flat faced breeds can have particular grooming considerations around their breathing, temperature, skin folds and general comfort. This makes calm handling and careful observation especially important.
I welcome Pugs, French Bulldogs, English Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, Shih Tzus and other brachycephalic breeds.

What happens if my dog’s coat is matted?
Please do not feel embarrassed about bringing a matted dog to the groomer.
Matting can develop surprisingly quickly and can be affected by coat type, harnesses, clothing, wet weather and how effectively the coat is brushed.
My priority will always be your dog’s welfare and comfort.
Trying to brush or cut through severe matting can be uncomfortable and may not be the kindest option. I will assess your dog’s coat and explain the most appropriate way forward.
We can then discuss a manageable grooming and home care routine to help reduce the likelihood of severe matting returning.
Should I brush my dog between grooming appointments?
For many breeds, absolutely.
Professional grooming and home grooming work best together.
Regular brushing can help remove loose coat, identify knots before they become larger mats and get your dog accustomed to being handled.
However, technique matters. It is possible to brush the top of the coat while knots continue developing underneath.
I am always happy to offer guidance about caring for your particular dog’s coat between appointments.
Do short haired dogs need grooming?
They can benefit enormously from professional grooming.
Short haired dogs may not need haircuts, but they still shed hair and can benefit from bathing, coat care, nail trimming and de-shedding.
Removing loose undercoat can help keep the skin and coat in good condition while reducing the amount of loose hair making its way around your home.
How long does a dog grooming appointment take?
Appointment length varies.
Breed, size, coat condition, service required and your dog’s behaviour and confidence can all affect how long a groom takes.
Because Hello Grooming is based around calm, individual care, I do not want to rush a dog simply to meet an arbitrary finishing time.
I will give you an idea of what to expect when booking and let you know when your dog is ready.
Do you offer dog teeth cleaning?
Yes. Hello Grooming offers Emmi Pet ultrasonic teeth cleaning.
This is a gentle, non invasive service designed to support your dog’s oral hygiene.
It is important to remember that grooming salon teeth cleaning is not veterinary dentistry. If I see something that concerns me, I may recommend speaking to your vet.
Can you cut my dog’s nails without a full groom?
Yes. Nail trimming is available as one of the services at Hello Grooming.
How frequently nails need trimming varies considerably between dogs. Dogs that naturally wear their nails down on harder surfaces may need them trimming less frequently than others.

What should I tell you before my dog’s appointment?
Please tell me anything that could help me make your dog’s appointment safer and more comfortable.
That includes health conditions, previous injuries, skin problems, allergies, behavioural concerns, previous grooming experiences or anything your dog particularly dislikes.
There is no benefit in hiding something because you are worried I might judge your dog.
The more I understand, the better I can prepare.
Do you groom elderly dogs?
Yes, subject to the individual dog’s health and needs.
Older dogs may need a different approach from younger dogs. They can become tired more quickly or find standing for long periods difficult.
Their comfort is more important than creating a technically perfect haircut.
